BS Civil Engineering

Program Overview

Civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines. It is often known as the mother of all engineering disciplines. It deals with planning, designing, construction, and maintenance of different structures such as buildings, tunnels, bridges, dams, harbors, sports stadia, hospitals, airports, roads, railways, high-rise monuments, etc. In short, Civil Engineers play a vital role to provide basic needs of human beings.

Civil Engineering provides foundation to start every new project. Buildings, roads and bridges are often the first constructions that come to mind, as these are the most conspicuous creations of structural engineering, one of civil engineering's major disciplines. Roads, railways, subways, and airports are designed by transportation engineers which is another specialized area of civil engineering.

Without civil engineers, the world as we know today would not exist because civil engineers build the infrastructure that supports our daily lives and adds to the quality of life. Thus the educational mission of the Civil Engineering undergraduate program is to train future generations to become competent professionals and researchers with the ability to analyze, evaluate as well as design civil engineering structures and have the ability to communicate effectively with the clients, consultants and contractors.

The Civil Engineering program at the School of Engineering (SEN) of the University of Management and Technology (UMT) has been designed to prepare the students to become leaders in industry, government and academia. Particular attention would be paid so that graduates of our program have solid background in scientific, mathematical, technical and professional skills. The undergraduate Civil Engineering curriculum includes foundation courses in mathematics, physics, and material sciences. Core civil engineering courses constitute much of the remaining curriculum.
