Civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines. It is often known as the mother of all engineering disciplines. It deals with planning, designing, construction, and maintenance of different structures such as buildings, tunnels, bridges, dams, harbors, sports stadia, hospitals, airports, roads, railways, high-rise monuments, etc. In short, Civil Engineers play a vital role to provide basic needs of human beings.
Civil Engineering provides foundation to start every new project. Buildings, roads and bridges are often the first constructions that come to mind, as these are the most conspicuous creations of structural engineering, one of civil engineering's major disciplines. Roads, railways, subways, and airports are designed by transportation engineers which is another specialized area of civil engineering.
Without civil engineers, the world as we know today would not exist because civil engineers build the infrastructure that supports our daily lives and adds to the quality of life. Thus the educational mission of the Civil Engineering undergraduate program is to train future generations to become competent professionals and researchers with the ability to analyze, evaluate as well as design civil engineering structures and have the ability to communicate effectively with the clients, consultants and contractors.
The Civil Engineering program at the School of Engineering (SEN) of the University of Management and Technology (UMT) has been designed to prepare the students to become leaders in industry, government and academia. Particular attention would be paid so that graduates of our program have solid background in scientific, mathematical, technical and professional skills. The undergraduate Civil Engineering curriculum includes foundation courses in mathematics, physics, and material sciences. Core civil engineering courses constitute much of the remaining curriculum.
Main objective of the Civil Engineering Program of UMT is to provide the students professional and scientific education to become successful professional engineers. Specifically, our graduates will be trained with a view to:
- Functioning in professional environment in industry, government, and academia; applying and building upon civil engineering knowledge, problem solving skills, and communication techniques;
- Working efficiently both in teams as well as in leadership roles applying ethical standards including the ASCE code of ethics within and beyond traditional Civil Engineering disciplines; and
- Be aware with the technology, contemporary scientific and societal issues, and consequently improve their skills and knowledge through lifelong learning process.
Why Degree in Civil Engineering?
Civil Engineering is the “mother of all engineering disciplines”. It plays a vital role in almost every field of life ranging from transportation infrastructures, high-rise buildings, hydropower, water supply and irrigation projects. This is because of diversity and wide applicability of knowledge intrinsic to the field of Civil engineering.
In the Bachelor Degree of Civil Engineering at UMT, emphasis will be on the fundamental concepts and principles of civil engineering relating to buildings, roads, and transportation as well as irrigation infrastructures such as head-works, barrages and dams. To foster creative abilities, the students will be assigned projects on design of real world projects, laboratory as well as field investigations. The classroom and laboratory work will be supplemented with educational tours of different industries, buildings, hydropower and irrigation projects to acquaint the students with the engineering projects and applications.
The graduates of Civil engineering program will be well prepared as competent professional engineers in consulting, engineering project management, structural design and analysis. Civil engineers will be employed by different industries including manufacturing, production, chemical and process in addition to construction and building projects. Moreover, different government establishments, consulting firms, and academia also offer a large number of opportunities for Civil engineers.
Civil engineering is a wide ranging profession, including several specialized disciplines. After the four years of Bachelor of Science in civil engineering, the graduates of UMT shall have sufficient opportunities of getting jobs in wide range of national and international organizations.
The main national organizations include National Highway Authority (NHA), Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), Communication & Works Department (C&W), Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Public Health Engineering Department, Pakistan Railways, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Irrigation and Power Department, different consulting firms such as National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK), Associated Consulting Engineers (ACE), National Development Consultants (NDC), Descon Engineering, Izhar Construction, SKB Engineering & Construction, Habib Rafiq and many others.
