Academic Programs

BS Mechanical Engineering

Program Overview

Mechanical engineering is the discipline of engineering that applies the principles of physics and materials science for the design, manufacturing, operations, analysis, and maintenance of mechanical systems. Production and usage of heat and mechanical power; design and analysis of production machinery, industrial equipment, heating, and cooling systems, aircraft, watercraft; industrial automation, design and production of medical devices, etc. are all directly or indirectly related to mechanical engineering.

This field requires an understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, and structural analysis. Drawing upon these core concepts and the knowledge base from cross-disciplinary (non)engineering fields like aerospace, electrical, civil, chemical, biomedical, and metallurgical sciences, mechanical engineers have contributed extensively in realizing technological advancements in the world today.

The Mechanical Engineering program at SEN is designed to prepare its students to become leaders in industry, government, and academia. Particular attention is paid so that graduates of our program have solid grounds in scientific, mathematical, and technical knowledge.

Our coursework keeps pace with current relevant technologies. The undergraduate Mechanical Engineering curriculum includes foundation courses in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Engineering courses in fundamental areas constitute much of the remaining curriculum. A few technical electives allow the undergraduate student to specialize somewhat or pursue a broader understanding in a particular area. A senior capstone project experience culminates the curriculum.

VISION and MISSON

The mission of the Mechanical Engineering Department, in-line with the UMT mission, is to provide education that builds a strong foundation of mechanical engineering knowledge and ethical values, expands reasoning, develops the ability to solve complex engineering problems, and enhances communication skills for a successful career in industry and academia to address the needs of society.

PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEOs)

Five years after graduation, the graduates of the BSME program of UMT are expected to be characterized by the following three qualities:

PEO 1: Apply mechanical engineering knowledge and analytical skills to serve the respective fields in industry and academia with professional integrity

PEO 2: Demonstrate strong communication and managerial skills, as team leaders as well as team members.

PEO 3: Uphold social, environmental, and ethical responsibilities in their professional and societal activities

PROGRAM LEARNING OBJECTIVES (PLOs)

1. Engineering Knowledge: An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.

2. Problem Analysis: An ability to identify, formulate, research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.

3. Design/Development of Solutions: An ability to design solutions for complex engineering problems and design systems, components, or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

4. Investigation: An ability to investigate complex engineering problems in a methodical way including literature survey, design and conduct of experiments, analysis and interpretation of experimental data, and synthesis of the information to derive valid conclusions.

5. Modern Tool Usage: An ability to create, select and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools, including prediction and modeling, to complex engineering activities, with an understanding of the limitations.

6. The Engineer and Society: An ability to apply to reason informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to professional engineering practice and solutions to complex engineering problems.

7. Environment and Sustainability: An ability to understand the impact of professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts and demonstrate knowledge of and need for sustainable development.

8. Ethics: An ability to apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of engineering practice.

9. Individual and Team Work: An ability to work effectively, as an individual or in a team, in multifaceted and/or multidisciplinary settings.

10. Communication: An ability to communicate effectively, orally as well as in writing on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.

11. Project Management: An ability to demonstrate management skills and apply engineering principles to one’s own work, as a member and/or leader in a team to manage projects in a multidisciplinary environment.

12. Lifelong Learning: An ability to recognize importance of and pursue lifelong learning in the broader context of innovation and technological developments.

Career Opportunities

The graduates of mechanical engineering program will be well prepared as competent engineers in consulting, engineering project management, mechanical design and analysis. The existing employment market for mechanical engineers is constituted by all sorts of industries, including manufacturing and production, chemical and process, construction and building, etc. Besides, different governmental establishments, consulting firms, and academia also offer a large number of opportunities for mechanical engineers.

Our mechanical engineers will be trained as per the domestic and global industry requirements. Within the country they will have ample opportunities in government and private departments.

  • Water and Power Development authority (WAPDA)
  • Lahore Development Authority (LDA)
  • Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA)
  • National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK)
